Jackson,
I love you more than anything in the world. Sadly, I know if your reading this I didn't make it. Stay strong for me, Ok? I tried for a long time to be strong, but I just got too tired. And I've always been lazy so there is something in this letter for everyone.
It was a cold outside. Freezing even but Jackson hardly felt it as he held the pieces of paper in his hand. It was all he, it was all they had left of her. That amazing wonderful girl that had changed the lifes of himself, Ian, Allie, Riley, and Samantha. The girl that taught him about love and ruined his take on it forever. Sure, Jackson was a player and jack ass before he met Paige but she changed him and made him want to be something better. But she was only around for two years. Two years and then he was the same girl playing guy again. But she told him that was okay. Because, well "Me and you, Paige and Jackson, we're both gonna be free like the birds".
Allie,
Take care of Jackson for me. Don't let him do anything to rash. Keep everybody together I would've if it was anyone else. I guess now you have to be the one to learn how to cook something other than ramen noodles and grilled cheese! Haha. You're my hero. And don't listen to what people say. You and Ian are meant to be together. If you break up I'll have to leave my place in heaven and come haunt you. Name your firstborn child after me! Just kidding girlie, I miss you, even up here in heaven. I promise you that. I know this isn't enough but it's the best goodbye I can give. Be happy
Jackson was sure Allie had lived up to Paige's expectations. She was going to marry Ian and she was two months pregnant. If it is a girl they're gonna name her Ava Paige. And, most importantly, Allie was the moral support that Jackson himself knew he needed. She was there everytime his tough wall went crumbling down. Everytime being with a girl didn't make the pain go away. Everytime he hurt a girl and he wondered why he couldn't feel it. Sure, that was part of his man's man-ness, but sometimes when he forgot to live, it was more. Allie helped with that.
Samantha,
Second oldest. Wild child. Make sure they remember to have fun. It's not a funeral you're having for me. It's a going away party. A celebration of my life. You know what I want. Keg stands and beer bongs! Lol, can you do that for me? Probably not because my mother would slaughter you but you can try. Please don't cry for me. Okay? You never cry, why start now? Do all the crazy things we always said we would. You're crazy and a female pimp, lol, go be Jackson's accomplice in reeking havoc on the lives of innocent people that just wanna fall in love with you. Crazy running and tackling hugs from me to you.
Life got sad for Sammy when Paige got to weak to give her one of those hugs. Paige was crazy but Sam was crazier. They were the dynamic duo when they were together and when it was all six of the kids things could get out of hand really fast. Good lord the time they had in high school. They tipped cows. Destroyed the house at Ian's families hunting camp. And got sugar high off of pixie sticks and came crashing down from that like crack addicts. Life was simple and innocent then. None of them had felt real pain yet.
Riley,
My little mommy. You are a nut bag. And sometimes you suck the fun out of everything. And yes I am being hard on you even while I'm dead. Yes, I know that's harsh and I'm being blunt, but I'm dying so I can do that. Please, live a little. Take a pill for that disorder of yours and get on with life. Not everything has to be perfect. And sometimes when you live a little, wonderful things happen. Remember all those times we watched those chick flicks about strong southern women?
And remember in Steel Magnolias when Shelby says "I would rather have thirty minutes of wonderful than a lifetime of nothing special." Well, honey, if you stay so serious you're gonna have a lifetime of nothing special. Even if it's just 29 minutes, have something wonderful for me. Lots of love.
Riley met a boy. Or that's what they kept telling Jackson. Actually it was more like screeching in his ears. Allie and Sammy never had been so proud of their "little Rye Rye". She'd talked to a boy. She'd met a boy. She'd even been talked into doing crazy, fun things by a boy. Something told Jackson it had as much to do with Paige's words as it did the boy. But he was happy for her. Happy for them all. Because Paige had helped them grow up. Helped them realize who they were, really. And that they could be so much more and that she had faith in them all.
Ian,
Beat the living fuck out of Jackson if he gets too mopey. You're one of the only people in the world that I'm sure can actually accomplish this. Just don't kill him or mess up his pretty face. I'm sure he's gonna be so rude to girls that it'll be his good looks and humor that get him another one. Because we all know it won't be his charm and chivalry. And it definately won't be the fact that he tells a girl she's beautiful instead of sexy. You're the best big brother a girl could ever ask for. You kept me safe and when Jackson forgot to be nice, you and you're fist made him remember. I love you and you better take care of Miss Allison for me. Propose real cute like for me, okay? I luffles you bubba roo!
Ian didn't know what to do when Paige first died. He was worried about his girlfriend, his bestfriend, and his sisters. At one point he even forgot his own grief. He was holding Allie while she cried in the middle of the night and then he was picking Jackson up from bars in the middle of the night. He also made frequent trips to the cemetary with Birds of Paradise to put on Paige's grave site. Jackson wasn't surprised that Paige left hardly any commands for Ian. He knew that she thought "her big brother" was nearly perfect. He worried about himself last and that's what everyone that knew Ian respected that about him.
I LOVE THE FOUR OF YOU MORE THAN I CAN EVER TELL YOU. LIVE YOUR LIFES FOR ME. GOD, THAT'S CHEESY, BUT I MEAN IT.
xoxo,
Paige Emmaline June Walker
Paige touched their lives more than she probably knew. Though in the months after she was diagnosed with cancer they kept reminding her of that. She always shrugged it off. Paige was modest and despite her crazy actions, she was sweet. Jackson knew for sure that she was their angel. Not everyone gets to know who the angel is in their lives but he was sure Paige was it for him.
He'd never know anything like her again.
Jax, aren't you special? You get the beginning and the end of this letter. You have touched my life in so many ways in the last two years. I got to live and I got to love another with every ounce of my being. I was just a mere chapter in your life and you're going to have so many more. And believe it or not they'll all be better than anything we ever experienced. I know you won't listen to this, but don't cry for me. I'm okay with this. I do, however, wish it was like a vacation and that you got to come with me, but our friends wouldn't like that. I know you're probably gonna go buck wild. Again. I tamed your "ladies man" ways and you're probably gonna revert back to them again. Which isn't very nice since some other girl is gonna have to repeat all the work I did. I actually take that back, she's gonna do a better job than I did. Life isn't fair. I have to leave my soul mate before I'm ready, and you, well you have two of them. Enjoy it you lucky bastard. I love you with all of my heart. You're the only one for me babe.
Oh, and tell Lucy I love her and that I didn't leave because of her. It wasn't her fault and momma loves her baby.
Jackson folded up the letter and stuffed it into his back pocket. Nights like this when he and Lucy were out laying beneathe the stars he'd bring it out to read. It kept him grounded. She was his gravity and she was a permenant chapter in his life. Even when he was out being a party boy. Jax lived his life just like Paige wanted him to. And he knew that one day he might be able to love again but that wasn't today. He listened so well he followed the others when they moved to New York to work with horses. Every single one of them were crazy about horses, even Paige loved them, but he didn't. He'd be with his family though because that's what she wanted. She. Her. Paige. She. Her. Paige. She'd been dead for three years and it was still all about her. And Jackson was okay with that.
"Well, Luce, our next big adventure, what do you think?" Jackson asked the dog laying next to him. She just cocked her head to the side and stared at him with her pretty amber eyes. "Are you a horse dog?"
She barked and wagged her tail, making her beloved owner let out a deep, throaty laugh.
"I didn't think so, but maybe this will be good with us. You can make friends with Riley's giant dog..and I can learn to live..just live," he sighed and began stroking the red and white strands of fur on Lucy's head. And he began to hum real softly the words to a song that helped with the hard times.
Life's a dance you learn as you go
Sometimes you lead, Sometimes you follow
Don't worry about what you dont know
Life's a dance you learn as you go
